1.  Anxiety is a central concept in most systems of psychotherapy. Identify systems that view the maintenance and function of anxiety similarly and then contrast two of these sets of systems.

3. Existentialism identifies three levels of our world and hypothesizes that personalities differ in their own ways of existing at each of these levels. Apply these concepts to the case  substance abuse, depression, or  eating disorders. How could these levels be maladaptively  functioning for these individuals and what could you, as therapist, suggest as a way of conceptualizing these ideas to the client to help them better understand their condition?

2. Discuss the origins of psychopathology across several systems of psychotherapy.  What does each say is the “cause” of mental illness?

4.  Defense mechanism is a central concept in many systems of psychotherapy. Identify those that consider defense mechanisms as a central function within the theory. Include those that might use other terminology for the same concept. Compare the role of defense mechanisms among these therapies, including discussion of what value they might place on it in the therapeutic work.

5. Hannah and Greg both work with Trauma and grief primarily.  Hannah works from a Strictly Existential/humanistic perspective, and Greg works utilizing REBT and CBT modalities.  They would like to co-lead a group for individuals grieving the loss of a loved one.  What would you expect to see them agree on?  What would they potentially disagree on?  Describe some differences and commonalities of the two approaches to the topic of their group.

7.  Compare the similarities of the following theories:
    Emotionally Focused Therapy
   Object Relations Theory
    Transactional Analysis

6.  Alice is working with a teen who is newly diagnosed with alcohol abuse and has dropped out of school.  He is angry and defensive.  Alice reflects back on her own difficulties dealing with these issues as a teen, and relates immediately to everything the teen is going through.  She is certain if she shares her life history and experiences with the teen that he will develop rapport with her and she will be able to help him understand what he needs to do.  What would be your advice for Alice regarding the pros and cons of disclosing her history  to the teen?
